Staten Island Volleyball Squad Heading to Special Olympics USA Games

“STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Ranging in age from 17 to 73, the volleyball team from On Your Mark will represent the Empire State July 1 through July 6 at the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games in Seattle. 

Of the 66,000 special-needs athletes in New York state, only 53 will travel to Seattle to compete — including Staten Island’s 12 On Your Mark players — whose  gold-medal performance in state competition earned them the invite. 

Special Olympics is the world’s largest athletic organization for children and adults with developmental disabilities; it’s mission is to showcase the abilities of athletes and promote the ideals of acceptance and inclusion through sports.

At a recent practice in the Tompkinsville facility of On Your Mark, which provides services to the developmentally disabled in Brooklyn and on Staten Island, there was excitement – and boundless energy – in the air, as the team gathered for a bi-weeky practice session under the direction of head coach Lou Raneri, two assistant coaches and the team’s senior member, Gerry Cohen.”
